MEMORY VERSE: "I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever" (I Samuel 2:35).
"Love at first sight" is often used to describe an initial, positive attraction toward another. Some people who experience this marry and live happily ever after. But in most cases, this is not how it works out.
God's love is different, though. His love is an everlasting love (Jer. 31 :3) that endures in spite of our sinfulness. However, this does not mean we can take His love for granted.
God chose Israel because of His love for them. They were not more numerous than other nations (Deut. 7:7). "But because the Lord loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers" (vs. 8) was reason enough to select them as His own. He is "the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments" (vs. 9). He was faithful to them even when they were unfaithful to Him!
Numbers 25:10-13; I Samuel 2:30-36
NUM. 2 5:10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
U Phin'e-has, the son of E-le-a'zar, the son of Aar'on the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
I SAM. 2:30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
32 And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house forever.
33 And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.
34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hop'ni and Phin'e-has; in one day they shall die both of them.
35 And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.
36 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
